Well (as a guess) you must have an email address right?
1)goto the web page and set it to the opposite of read on the web (can't
think right now)
2) make a folder in YAM
3) goto the config and set a filter to move all mail with "[afb]" in the
subject to the new folder. done

Well if you dial the 0800 number, then you wont be charged...I don't see

No, they're different addresses but a single mailbox. It's no different
to the system used by most companies, where all mail for
anyone@company.com goes to the same machine which then sorts it out to
the individual users.
It's more efficient for dialup use, since you only have one login and
authentication for each mail collection. If you had completely separate
mailboxes, you'd have to collect each one separately, which means
longer online.
However, separate mailboxes are better when you really need them to be
separate, with each user having their own password and login.

It's totally incompatible with all older Amiga programs. That's why it
was in beta testing for four months, to make sure that nothing slipped
through the net, that no older programs sneaked through and were able
to run.

They're currently at 238, 238, 238. Though whether this is my doing or
some combination of NewIcons, Magic Workbench, Magic Copper or some
other wierd patch that modifies my palette on the fly that I do not

Next time it plays up, I'll reboot without a startup sequence and see
if it still does it without all this extra software running.
Today it is behaving perfectly.

Gentlmen and ladies.
Has any one had the same experiance as me?
I needed a new mouse so looking through my copy of AF I chose the one
by Power computing, together with the punchinello mouse
adaptor(the mouse wont' work with out it)The package came with a disk
for the wheel support. All well and good.I pluged every thing in and
all went well-the rodent worked.
I then loaded up the wheel support program,I thought well it's free
why not . BUT when I came to use my internet program I could not log
on.The message "could not open serial device(serial device)!" kept
popping up.It wasn't until I removed the wheel support prog' that I
got back my internet.
Now did I do some thing wrong? All I did was remove one mouse and
pluged another one in, and loaded in a prog'.The instructions that
came with the package is not very clear--at least not to my mind but
there again I'm no boffin.
Any one got any thoughts.
Many thanks

When I exit and restart the program they are still there! Where is the file

the location of any files that might do this.
I have tried Microdot.prefs but it is encrypted as far as i can tell and won't

On UK A1200 the # and @ are on the same key but that's not universal. I think

The Mouse software mustn't be allowing you to use the Serial port in
shared mode,
but then again, why would it use that anyway, if you modem is plugged
into the
serial port? You can either have on or the other, not both, so no need
to lock
the serial port if the mouse isn't using it....strange

Copy your standard interface, change the phone number in the copy and
use it at weekends. If there's no 0845 number in the interface config,
there's no danger of Genesis dialling it.

I confess! I confess!
I don't know how it got so out of control. One minute you're just playing
around, you know, with your mates. Then you just lose it.
"I'm going to be Ben Vost," says one,
"I'm going to be Nick Veitch" says another
And before you know it, you're Richard Drummond and you just don't care.
It's just a buzz, innit? You don't care what the consequences might be, you
just do it.
And then it becomes, like, an addiction and you find yourself growing your
hair and stuff and signing your cheques 'Richard Drummond'. And that's when
the downers start.
But I'm trying to go straight, I really am. I'd been cold turkey for three
weeks now until that Goddamned poll come along.
I hate you O'Neill! All that effort and achievement wasted - you've sent me

Yes, I should have remembered! I had noticed it on my first Amiga, which
had an American keyboard, but honestly I thought that GB had adopted Azerty,
and that the only differences were on the numbers line.
I had edited a sort of "translation table" for the A1000, especially to
find all these non-alphabetical characters more easily. I'll see if I can
adapt it to the A1200 keymaps ( and if it's worth sending )

Strange, IBrowse didn't ask me for anything. I even managed to change my

The punchinello plugs into the mouse port on the A1200, so you should

I'm scratching my head trying to remember the exact numbers, (if you're
/really/ interested, I can dig the manuals out...) but I'm sure that the
sampling rate is no where near 144k, but more like 28k per channel for DACS
(Digital Audio Carrier System), hence the lower transfer speeds. It's good
enough for telephone speech, which only uses the range 300Hz to 3400Hz
anyway, but crap for fast data. There is also no 16k control channel with
DACS, as it uses the data channels for control/timing as well.
The audio channels of Home Highway actually use the digital ISDN channels
for transmission to the local exchange. So, the data is converted from
analogue (output from modem) then back to digital (to be carried over the
line), back to analogue at the exchange and from there dealt with in the
same way as any other analogue call which, if the call is to another
exchange, it can involve more D>A & A>D again!
I think something gets lost in the translation :-P
I know that there were problems with earlier versions of the Network
Terminating Equipment (the grey box that gets installed) that caused
problems with fax and modems when using the analogue ports, but the later
revisions seem better.
Chris.

Hi,
Are there any programs that let you record sounds DIRECTLY from the sound
channels? I have a few Mp3's which i'd like to record certain parts from. On a
PeeCee, i'd just load up WinAMP and Sound Recorder, play the MP3 and hit Record
in sound recroder. Anything similar to this for the amiga, or would it even be
possible to make one?
Cya!

If the problem is that the sound is too quick it could be that the two similar
machines have differing speed CD ROM drives. The sound is fine on a 2x CD ROM
but you might need to visitthe pub a few times on a 32x CD ROM.

If the story on Czech Amiga News is true, then there may not be much chance of
updates. Allegedly, some IDIOTS pirated, cracked (whatever) and uploaded OS3.5
fo BBS's and FTP sites.

What do you mean? DOpus Mag still works like a charm on my os3.5 system.
As for the icons being only four colours, that is a problem of DOpus
(that is being fixed), but you could still use Newicons.
> Icons not compatible with NewIcons,
Of course. You can use NewIcons if you want. Noone forces you to use the
new icon system, although I have been told it is faster. You can even
use Newicons without that patch in your startup-sequence.
> GUI is absolutely disgraceful,
You can make it look like GadTools, at least almost. The only difference
I could spot is that the text inside gadgets seems to be not exactly
centered. Plus you can have Window backgrounds, just like in MUI, to
give your Amiga a more consistent and professional look.

M2 and T7 do not stop to work, I'm still using them. Plus you get a lot
of bugfixes (just look at the setpatch output), improved RTG support
(really), great new icons, a proper CDFS, a workbench with ARexx port
and a new API (which could be used to program tools that replace hacks
like deficons), etc...

A propos care for customers, you get free support by email, web and
phone (only Germany though I think).
It's time I get a job in marketing .)

I think the Amiga HQ is only in Germany because Escom went bankrupt in
Germany! Petro kept the business going as a liquidator and later
established Amiga International together with GW2k. So I think it's more
a historical reason...
> Someone did say to me that there are more Amiga users than PC users in

No. Maybe at the beginning of the nineties, nearly everyone seemed to
have an A500, but now Amiga's market share is very low. Although in one
PC magazine I regularily read, one of the writers always has an "Amiga
Computer" icon on his Windows desktop... (I think that's Amiga Forever,
isn't it?) Maybe Amiga users are just hiding very well :)
> anyone tell me the real size of the German Amiga Community? Maybe

Let's see, UK has two Amiga Mags, Germany also two (Ok, two and a half,
there is a PC magazine with an Amiga supplement for subscribers). I
think the two communities are the same size in percent to the
population. Germany has a bigger population, so that would explain the
number of Amiga companies, but I think the market share is the same in
the UK and in Germany.

Which would explain the lack of V90 connects, too many A<-->D switches.
I wonder why it always connects at 31200 though, never 33600, not that I
use it that much. Fax works at up to 14400 so something is right.

Spot on! Unfortunately it's not quite fixed it. If I open up an Aminet
folder (from the CD) and double-click on a .readme file the Execute
window comes up with just the filename. If I choose to look at the
folder using Icons the icon used is clearly a text file icon (complete

Good idea, ta. Although I'll just use "search" in C: so I don't have

I may have got you wrong, but if you mean you run out of memory, try
viewing with Visage, using the SCALE parameter. This should scale it
on screen. If you actually need it scaled so you can play around with,
I'm afraid I can't help.

Does the mouse wheel support actually work?
What it's doing is using the serial port, even though the mouse is plugge=
d into the amiga mouse port.
Actually, I've just realised the problem: =
The mouse wheel software is to let you use serial mice with an amiga seri=
al port, it presumably came with the mouse.
The interface you have, however, lets you use serial mice in the standart=
mouse port, removing the need for extra drivers.
The problem with that is, that you loose the mouse wheel support.
Well, there you go. If you really want the mouse wheel support, I gues=
s you have to have the mouse plugged into the serial port, but as you don=
't have an extra serial port for your modem, I guess you're stuck eh?
=

Yep, there is a way. Use an MP3 player that supports AHI. Then you ca=

FWIW Aweb3.3 had no problems casting my poll, and being able to dipense with

An idea I can't test:
<http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/docs-1.5/tutorials/includes.html>
... is a web page with an official-looking bit of info on SSI from NCSA.
It says there are two valid exec tags: "cmd" and "cgi". "virtual", what
you're using, isn't one of them. Maybe you should change to "cgi"...
*** From the web page I mentioned above ***
o ``exec'' executes a given shell or CGI script. It must be activated to
be used. Valid tags are:
o ``cmd'' will execute the given string using /bin/sh. All the
variables defined below are defined, and can be used in the
command.
o ``cgi'' will execute the given virtual path to a CGI script and
include its output. The server does not perform error checking
to make sure your script didn't output horrible things like a
GIF, so be careful. It will, however, interpret any URL
Location: header and translate it into an HTML anchor.

That little, rectangular bit of plastic that you push down to grip the

Which version of IBrowse? One of the demo versions I've used has similar
problems. OTOH, when I tried to change my email address through eGroups
site, I couldn't (I don't know if they've fixed that problem yet?) so
I just resubbed under my new address (which is also what eGroups suggested

I can assure you that both channels are carried via a digital stream at
144 kbits and produce 2 x 64kbit/s channels, I don't know what the extra
16k is for as I can't take too long to look it up as I'm at work at the
moment (and yes I work for BT). V34 modems will be supported around
26-28KBit/sec, this is not the maximum of 33.6KBit/sec but on most
copper
lines the rate will be better than V34 modems over the copper line only.
V90(56KBit/sec) modems are not supported due to the additional analogue
interface into the switch but will fall back into V34 modem speeds. This
information comes from our information service system on our Intranet
site.

Believe it or not, I also have problems with Azerty ( I typed for 10 years

is that you can type numbers without using shift. You'll never know how lucky

Thanks for the lesson, you were right to correct what, I admit, was a bit
inaccute, but I was referring to /coins/ rather than to the system itself.
Since I didn't mean "bob" as the equivalent of 5 new pence :
- Either I was right to make an exception, adding an -s just like I said
"pennies" instead of "pence".
- Or I should not have used "bob" for "shillings" at all.
Something similar applies to my second mistake : I was lucky to find
a few two-and-six bits on which "half crown" was still mentioned,
which /does/ make a difference for collectors!

Hi all,
The subject says it all really. Does CacheCDFS (which comes with OS3.5)
have support for Joliet CD filesystem. Unfortunately I think I have to

work with scsi cd drives - the power computing advert suggests it does,

FlashFind does in ten seconds. The syntax is compatible, so you can

When they used a DACS for my second line, I was (eventually) told that it
would only work at a maximum of 14.4k. Suitable for a fax, but not a modem.
Needless to say it was immediately ripped out, I got some more compensation
(I already had a year's free calls because of the amount of time it took
them to fit the line) and I was getting 52k connects.

propagating it to all the news sites and newsgroups and

Presumably you didn't plug in the serial cable too? If you did it's no

The same is always true. However, I really hope it doesn't damage sales of
the OS as much as it has done Opus, TurboPrint, STFax, Voyager and so on
and so forth. Actually on the beta list someone was saying about there
being a hack to setpatch in the pirated version, so I dread to think what

Hi foilks,
I see 3.5 has arrived - unlike my copy. I havnt got it yet :(
Anyway - onto the subject in hand.
I recently changed my email loggin address and ever since have not been
able to access egroups from home with Voyager. At uni and with the
demo Ibrowse I can use it but with Voyager I cant. The problem is that
Voyager wont let me logout of "biffordyoungest@hotmail.com" in order to
re-log-in as "sam@biffordyoungest.u-net.com".
This is really annoying. No matter how many times i click the logout
button it still takes me back to "goto BiffordYoungest@hotmail.com or
logout". Even after a refresh its still there.
Has anyone any ideas on how to get past this?
Thanx in advance,

No. H&P were saying that they needed 30,000 sales to make it worth their

So naive, these youngsters :)
Pirates THRIVE on people doing that, it means they've hit a nerve.
Best to shut up and report them to the proper authorities (H&P,
FAST) without telling the pirates themselves. If you know who they
are, of course (as Ben said, *prove* they downloaded it)

My A1200/PPC PowerTower has suddenly become VERY unstable, yet the
cause is unclear (though it did seem to start when my mum said "your
computer keeps crashing lately").
It was totally stable before installed DOpus Magellen 2, and then it
became a bit shaky. However, the problem has got worse. It seems to
crash just as DOpus' load gauge fills. I have FBlit, RexxMast, and Arq
in WBStartup, with VisualPrefs and NewIcons in the startup-sequence.
I re-installed everything (a fun task with a quite-full 4.3 Gb HD!) and
it is stable as long as I only use WB (not DOpus). Any theories?
Incidently, I plan to do some surgery on it tonight in order to find
any h/w faults. Time to give blood to the Blood God...

BING!
Send me the appropriate startup files, lists of apps in WBStartup
(and order of loading) and I'll sort them out for you.

Before you do that, though, open your tower and make sure everything
is securely connected, ESPECIALLY your PPC card.
Leads, cables, wires, connectors, screws.. check them all..
Make sure your PSU and CPU fans *SPIN* when you turn on. Get some
'spray air' and clean them if they look dirty.
May just be overheating.. but send me your startups anyway, I
enjoy seeing how badly set up people's machines are :)

Hi Matt. Can I do this too as I have the same problem as Amipa
(although Ive disabled the startup progress bar). Also, with Dopus, if
I try to change the screenmode without disabling the background picture
the thing crashes, and if I try to load or change a theme it goes
haywire. I have to delete all environments and start again. Very odd -
so Im sticking with one basic environment which only takes 5 mins to
re-do in case of failure.
Thanks,
Bifford the Youngest.

Neat :)
Go ahead, send them to mws2@leicester.ac.uk
For optimum configuration I will need:
S:startup-sequence
S:user-startup
.. and any scripts that they call, plus the output of:
List SYS:Wbstartup ALL TO T:WBStartupList
..and any version information you might think is appropriate.
This is a two-man job, I can't do this alone, so expect
little questions to flit back and forth between you and I,
especially with regards to versions, patches, and 'what the
hell is this?' enquiries :)
Go ahead, send send send (not a general invitation, although
I could start a service and charge for this :)

What spec Amiga do you have. We could have a common probelm on our
hands people...
A1200 PowerTower
BlizzardPPC 603e/175, 040/25, 64 Mb FastRAM
IDE Buffered i/face: 4.3Gb HD, 16 x CDROM, internal ZIP drive
56k modem (NetConnect2)

A1200 PowerTower (everytrhing nicely secured and whiring!)
Appolo '040 25Mhz, 32Mb FastRAM,
IDE Bufferered Interface: 2.1Gb HD, 32x & 4x CDROM, Internal ZIP
56k MagicXpress modem + NC3+Fast Serial Port.
Dopus Magellan + the patch from GPSofts website and OPUS MPEGA.
WB3.0 (soon 3.5) & OS3.1 chips.
Super-Hi-Res-Laced 128 colours (love the size - need the colours for a
half way decent background)
15" Monitor and Internal scandoubler/flicker fixer.
Just about does it! But are you sure we are not twins lost at birth?

Yeah, as long as you don't touch any of the other partitions.
You'd be best to resize the partition to half size, and then
create a new partition in the blank space you leave behind,
it's more 'fluid' that way.
Makes no difference in operation, it just means you are less
likely to make a mistake by deleting too many or the wrong
partitions.
If you're unsure about whether what you do is right, simply
write down the block starts and ends on each partition, and
change away. If you hard drive explodes, simply re-enter the
values and you'll have your old partitions back, and a decent
disk salvager should be able to make good work of them.
Oh, and backup!
> On another point is SFS as good as it soulds..?
soulds? It's as good as they say, but don't put anything important
on there, 'cos the author has a knack of making the versions ever
so incompatible with each other every now and again :)

^^ that could be half the problem... mixing and matching 3.1 and

PS. I have WB3.0 running on WB3.0 ROMs. No fast serial port (though I'm
thinking about getting one), or scan-doubler (BVision on the way
(apparently)), NetConnect2, and a nice'n'fast 8 colour DblPAL

The 68851? Sadly, I don't believe that the 680EC20 in the 1200 is capable

Of course it is, but the thing is that the interface circuitry
and the way you access them (the 68851s) are twisted beyond
extremes. It can be done, though..
Why else do you think they started integrating them? :)

Actually they're pretty O.K., you can put up with them because
you *KNOW* they don't know better
Most Amigans (and I use that as a derogatory term) think they
know everything. And they simply don't. But at least the general
public will be humble and say 'I don't know what I'm doing
so I called tech-support', rather than reeling round c.s.a.m
thinking they're preaching the word of Jesus! Hallelujah!

I think that may have been the one I used. I changed the keymap to a US one
thinking that at least it'd be easier to touch-type, but I don't really
touch-type so I kept getting confused looking at the keyboard while I was
typing... :(

Even with the EC model? I thought the brutally hacked-out features (24-bit
address space? Eww) included not supporting an MMU, although I could be
entirely wrong.

If so, or you have some details about it (I already have loads of software
to use with it, so nothing needed there) could you let me know...

Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 15:25:16 +0100
Well.
I like it. Having said that, I'm upgrading from Workbench 3.0, so I would
say that, wouldn't I?
I backed up my Boot: partition to a (bootable) slaved HDD, because I was
sure there would be problems. And there were.
I installed 3.2 off the CD - fine.
I pre-installed 3.5 - fine.
Until it rebooted. After that the screen stayed black and everything was
dead. I figured that something already on my workbench was giving it gip
(though I can't think what, anyway it's irrelevant now).
So I booted from my slaved HDD, wiped my Boot: bit and installed 3.1 afresh.
Then pre-installed it.
Then installed 3.5.
No problem.
Then made sure that the ATA3.driver was present on the main HDD, copying it
over from the slave.
*And then* I installed AmiCDFS (or whatever it is that comes with the
PowerFlyer).
Big mistake.
All of a sudden, Icons appear saying "CD0: Uninitialized". Slightly more
informative than 3.0's "????" (or just not putting anything there), but
still perplexing. Still, for me it's those little things that show that it
*has* been improved.
So I [deep breath] wiped it down and started again.
Works fine now BUT can anyone tell me how to get it to recognise audio CDs?
No icons appear when one goes in - is it a case of putting a "def_CDDA etc"
icon in the env/sys drawer like with newicons? And is CacheCDFS (or whatever
comes with 3.5) inherent in the system or does it still have to be installed
serperately? My only bugbear with the package is the lack of decent
documentation.
Oh, and how can this be considered a cludge when so much of the code has
supposedly been re-written?
TTFN,
James.

I know this isn't ASB (if it existed!) but I thought I woulad talk about it
anyway...
Now - Amiga Shopper was always hailed as the "serious" Amiga mag (as opposed
to Amiga Power which was known as the "boy racer" mag), and one of my
speculative purchases has provided me with a complete collection of AS along
with all the cover disk.
Now, they did bugger loads of reviews (serious) ones, and I am wondering if
(providing AF being part of Future would allow) I should get a complete
review index done from them (as per the AF database here at Egroups).
Would anyone be interested?
Does anyone care?
The main reason I ask is that a lot of our world is now based around getting
second-hand goods on the cheap and utilising them and AS has a lot of
details from a few years ago (apart from adverts for A3Ks @ 2699 and 32mb
RAM for 1000+).
Let me know (and also Ben due to the FuturePub link)

I'm not surprise, I was on IRC the other day, and someone was talking

To show the general attitude of the morons on there, they were also
enjoying themselves doing various other nasty tricks to cause users

Hi Paul. This might be a little bit of the problem (1d4 revision that
is).
I used to have a 1d4 uncorrected too and it crashed a hell of a lot. I
recently purchased a corrected 1b (i think) from one of the lovely
people on this list :) and while it doesnt crash *quite* so much it
does still crash.
Most of the problems happen before the machine has warmed up - after
3/4 (sometimes more) crashes when first used it usually becomes more
stable. Until I run certain programs that is :( so this could be part
of the problem, but not all of it.

Hello,
Does anybody know the exact procedure of obtaining a refund of the retail
price of Win98?
I seem to remember seeing it on an anti-M$ page somewhere, it goes like
this........
You buy a PeeCee, it has Win98 pre-installed, you take the box home, you
don't turn the computer on, you reject the terms & conditions on the
envelope containing the CD and then I think you then send the unopened
envelope back to M$ for a refund and then you're free to install Linux/BeOs
etc...
It would make an interesting feature in the mag,......."So you want to buy a
PC, but don't want Windows" or something like that. :)

Strange? Mine has a similar crash, er, routine? Maybe it's in the ROM!
I was also thinking that it may be due to the fact that IDE was only
ever meant to have two devices on it in the first place. The i/face in
the A1200 is just a basic IDE spec. I feel that the buffered i/face
connected to it may be getting the thing confused, thus throwing the
rest of the machine into tantrums! A PowerFlyer could be the answer...

Thats a shame, a as with most things: the few put a bad name to the
many.
A couple of idiots using Bots to chuck people off a channel when a
certain phrase or someat is typed or, as you described, people playing
tricks with other people. And especially this whole pirating thing.
Only a very few do it but it means we are tarred and feathered with the
rest of them, and unfortunately the big companies that do develop for
the Amiga (or any platform) take more notice of the jerks who rip off
their product, than the hundreds of others who actively support that
product and suggest improvments to it.

Hi Paul,
Can you send my doctor a sample of your blood?.....I just want to make
doubly certain we are not long lost brothers. Maybe dopalgangers?
(speelt wrong, no doubt).
Anyway, So we do a test. disable all but the HD and one of the other

If you get a power flyer and it somehow solves all problems (cant see

Looks like I'm gonna have to rip out my brother's Zip drive then!
Rather that than my nice'n'shiny Fujitsu HD...
Tell me your blood type, then there'll be no need for a blood test,
right?

Really? Are you sure? Well I'll be damned! Here I was under the
delusion it was a French saying. It certainly sounds French.
Any other popular sayings that are generally mis-placed locality wise,
Ben?

It doesn't. Remember it's "Que" which would have to be "Qu'est" to be
pronounced the way it is in French. Remember Manuel in Fawtly Towers?

People always think that "stiff upper lip" is British, when it's American as
is "Gordon Bennett!" (not that anyone says that any longer).

You're free to install Linux or BeOS anyway. As for the
refund, Microsoft tell you to talk to your PC manufacturer,
as they are the ones selling *you* the OS.
If you didn't want the OS, you can ASK not to have it, and
they MAY make a special case. They'd be stupid not to, but
Microsoft can in no way FORCE PC manufacturers to bundle
the OS, they just make it financially not-the-best-way-to
-do-business.
[Microsoft base their OEM prices on percentage PCs sold
with Windows bundled, the lower the percentage and therefore
the lower the amount of single packages means a higher price,
in essence it's a perverted bulk discount scheme, which many
people misconstrue as being 'evil']
Besides, if you look at your invoice for the PC you'll find
they price it via part count. System Box, Mouse, Keyboard,
Windows 98SE OEM, and whether they price it or not, this is
to stop YOU complaining that it's part of the system box.

That's not how it works, the controller chip on the board will actually
field devices according to which drive you're talking to. It doesn't get
'confused' because all it is is a fancy switch with some prongs attached.
Check your MaxTransfer rate, make sure it's no higher than 0x1fe00 on
all your devices, and send me those startup-sequence files, 'cos you're
BOUND to have something that is screwing with memory somewhere..
> A PowerFlyer could be the answer...
With a Blizzard PPC card, that would actually be a REALLY bad idea,
ESPECIALLY if you haven't had your 1.D.4 fixed..

I have a Roctec RocGen and (as I am a bit of a hoarder) I think I still

Matt, whats classified as "higher" than 0x1fe00? I think (off the top
of my head) my HD is at something like 0x1fffe. could be wrong though.
Can we have a list.?
Actually - Ben, can you do an article on this as Ive no idea what it
all does. I just keep reading things like "set it to ########### to
get the best performance." etc. I know a fair bit about buffers but
absolutely nouwt about maxtransfer rates, and I shouldnt think Im
alone.

Everybody I've seen on mailing lists with a Blizzard and a Power Flyer
have been moaning about incompatibilities, inability to use the Flyer
in higher PIO modes, data corruption, random crashes, EVERYTHING.
Plus, the PF and BPPC seem to augment the timing problems on the clock
port when brought together.. seeing as you don't have a serial port
or a sound card that doesn't bother you, but you'll still get the crashes,
the lack of feature compatibility.. need I say more?
(I thin they may have fixed it in v4 of the Power Flyer software though..)

Subject: [afb] OS3.5 hints
Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 17:56:03 +0200
OK. Here are some hints for OS3.5 I've found out. They might be useful
to others as well, and if your not interested just skip this mail ;)
1. After I've installed the OS3.5 CDFS driver, the computer kept telling
me how to obtain the full version after booting up. The CD Prefs program
did not work, too. It turned out I had installed Idefix97 some time ago,
decided not to use it and forgot about the CacheCDFS.device in L:. The
3.5 installer does not overwrite it, so you have to copy the device
manually from the CD.
2. If you want to convert your Magic-/Newicons to the new Icon format, there
are very useful programs in AmigaOS3.5:Contribution/ Converter-Scripts/ Icon-Tools/. There is even a script to convert all icons on a drive.
But make sure you have enabled Newicons support in Workbench Prefs,
otherwise the script will only convert small white dots to the new Icon
format and you have to reinstall icons by hand.
3. There is an icon datatype on the CD. When you find ToolManager can't
display your icons as images in dock bars anymore just install it and
Toolmanager will load the Icon as an image. This might be useful for
other similar programs as well.
4. You do not need ToolAlias patches anymore, if Workbench can't find a
default tool, it let's you choose another tool instead of just offering
you retry and cancel. It's small features like this that surprised me
because I did not expect them.
Regards,

Anything above and including 0x1fe01 :)
You're seriously telling me you can't count in hexadecimal? :)
> I think (off the top of my head) my HD is at something like 0x1fffe.

Go get a scientific calculator :)

> all does. I just keep reading things like "set it to ########### to

MaxTransfer is the maximum size of a 'block' of data that the interface
will transfer across the bus. 0x1fe00 is about 128k minus a few bytes.
So basically, your data will shuffle across the bus in 128,000 byte
chunks (yes, I know I'm using 1000 instead of 1024 for the calcs)
Set your MaxTransfer to 0xfe00 and it'll transfer in 64,000 byte chunks.
It'll do two chunks in the same time that it takes 0x1fe00 rate to do
one, so no data speed is lost (much)
Basically, if MaxTransfer is set too high and the OS requests a chunk
of data that exceeds the maximum SUPPORTED MaxTransfer size, then there
is a good chance that the data AFTER that supported value will be
corrupted. Some drivers compensate using buffering and clever limiting
techniques (i.e. they use lots of buffers, and only use low MaxTransfers
whether you specify higher ones or not). Most don't however.
The Amiga's IDE interface can do a pretty high rate, dependant on CPU
load. The drives connected to it are only guaranteed to do 64 or 128k
bursts of data if they're all pretty low spec drives.
Damn, it's too complicated. I've made a right mess of that translating
it into laymen's terms :)
